Evangelium Matt 25:1-13
In illo témpore: Dixit Iesus discípulis suis parábolam hanc: Simile erit regnum cœlórum decem virgínibus: quæ, accipiéntes lámpades suas, exiérunt óbviam sponso et sponsæ. At ille respóndens, ait: Amen, dico vobis, néscio vos. Vigiláte ítaque, quia néscitis diem neque horam.

Gospel Matt 25:1-13
In that time Jesus said to the people: Then shall the kingdom of heaven be like to ten virgins, who taking their lamps went out to meet the bridegroom and the bride. And five of them were foolish, and five wise. But the five foolish, having taken their lamps, did not take oil with them: But the wise took oil in their vessels with the lamps. And the bridegroom tarrying, they all slumbered and slept. And at midnight there was a cry made: Behold the bridegroom cometh, go ye forth to meet him. Then all those virgins arose and trimmed their lamps. And the foolish said to the wise: Give us of your oil, for our lamps are gone out. The wise answered, saying: Lest perhaps there be not enough for us and for you, go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves. Now whilst they went to buy, the bridegroom came: and they that were ready, went in with him to the marriage, and the door was shut. But at last came also the other virgins, saying: Lord, Lord, open to us. But he answering said: Amen I say to you, I know you not. Watch ye therefore, because you know not the day nor the hour.

FROM THE HOMILY OF DON ENRICO RONCAGLIA

We have heard the beautiful reading on the 5 wise and 5 foolish virgins (without oil, or rather of faith) and on the foolishness of those who boast about themselves (since not those who recommend themselves are approved, but the one whom the Lord recommends).

Today we remember, as a shining example of the wise virgins in the parable, Rosa di Santa Maria, born Isabel Flores de Oliva (Lima, April 20, 1586 – Lima, August 24, 1617).

Peruvian religious of the Dominican third order, she was canonized in 1671 by Pope Clement X and is the patron saint of Peru, her country of origin.

Santa Isabella (known as Rosa di Maria) and the first saint of Latin America.

Dedicated completely to God with the vow of virginity and chastity, she was misunderstood by her family. She slept with a crown of thorns on her head and on a bed covered with broken glass.

Her life was consumed in a short time amidst the persecutions, but also due to the sufferings that she imposed on herself for Christ. But her faith guided her and saved her like the wise virgins!

Regarding the foolishness of those who boast about themselves, not he who recommends (i.e., praises) himself is sent by God. This is in fact a clear manifestation of foolishness, if not a sign of vanity and perversion! We must therefore be cautious!

We must be careful. We are surrounded by false prophets and false teachers who betray the words of the true revelations of faith. We must carry with us, like wise virgins, the oil of faith in order to be able to discern true prophets and true teachers! Only with faith (the oil of the wise virgins), prayer and attentive listening to the words of Christ can we acquire the necessary discernment (and thus avoid the end of the foolish virgins)!

Praised be Jesus Christ!
