Evangelium Matt 18:23-35

Gospel Matt 18:23-35
At that time, Jesus spoke to His disciples this parable: The kingdom of heaven is likened to a king who desired to settle accounts with his servants. And when he had begun the settlement, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents. And as he had no means of paying, his master ordered him to be sold, with his wife and children and all that he had, and payment to be made. But the servant fell down and besought him, saying, ‘Have patience with me and I will pay you all!’ And moved with compassion, the master of that servant released him, and forgave him the debt. But as that servant went out, he met one of his fellow-servants who owed him a hundred denarii and he laid hold of him, and throttled him, saying, ‘Pay what you owe.’ His fellow-servant therefore fell down and began to entreat him, saying, ‘Have patience with me and I will pay you all.’ But he would not; but went away and cast him into prison until he should pay what was due. His fellow-servants therefore, seeing what had happened, were very much saddened, and they went and informed their master of what had taken place. Then his master called him, and said to him, ‘Wicked servant! I forgave you all the debt, because you entreated me. Should not you also have had pity on your fellow-servant, even as I had pity on you?’ And his master, being angry, handed him over to the torturers until he should pay all that was due to him. So also My heavenly Father will do to you, if you do not each forgive your brothers from your hearts.

FROM THE HOMILY BY DON ENRICO RONCAGLIA (**)

Today’s readings affirm two luminous truths of faith and forgiveness but also of divine justice:

In the epistle St. Paul invites us to wear the armor (or protection) of God in the rain of darts. This appeal is for each of us, for many people who are experiencing this bitter battle without armor, with indifference.

Attention! You need to be protected! This battle is not against men, but against the hierarchy of evil sent by satan and satan himself! We stand against the mighty of this world! [Editor’s note: These are therefore the scorpions of satan mentioned in the Apocalypse].

It is a battle that has always been there (even in the time of St. Paul). But now the battle is clear! We have to open our eyes. The battle is against the lord of this world, therefore Satan himself.

For this we must wear the armor of God, preparing ourselves for the bad day. We must wear the belt of truth.

We must discern! It is necessary to be lovers of the truth in all things! Satan is the lie. It is therefore necessary, like Saint Joseph, to be just people: not only to exercise rights but also duties, especially towards weak people. We must preach the gospel of peace, but not of pacifism [Editor’s note: in reality pro-atheism and pro-false antichristic religions]. The peace of Christ is the right way!

And our shield be faith. That many are losing or have already lost in the face of difficulties. If we have faith, nothing can attack us. And finally we put on the helmet, or the protection provided by God.

We only use the word of God, which is our double-edged sword! [Editor’s note: in his image as the triumphant Messiah, in chapter 1 of the AP of St. John, Jesus is described as follows:

16In his right hand he had seven stars, one came out of his mouth sharp double-edged sword and his face resembled the sun when it shines in all its strength.]

Coming to today’s Gospel, God has forgiven our sins and opened the gates of Heaven for us. But He also taught us how to behave in our life. It is therefore necessary to be merciful like him!

We must therefore learn to forgive, but obviously not the unrepentant sinner, but the one who truly repents himself!

Praised be Jesus Christ! Always be praised!
